Wegovy Pill vs Injection: What Each One Costs in 2026
The Wegovy pill was approved in December 2025 and launched at a lower self-pay price than the pen. Here is what Novo Nordisk publishes for each form, tier by tier, and where the two lines cross.
Short answer
Novo Nordisk publishes the Wegovy pill at $149 a month for the 1.5 mg tier, rising to $199 and $299 at higher strengths. The Wegovy pen is listed at $199 a month for two promotional fills through December 2026, then $349, with the 7.2 mg HD pen at $399 a month.
The two price ladders
Prices checked 2 September 2026; these change often.
The FDA approved once-daily oral semaglutide 25 mg for weight management on 22 December 2025 — the first oral GLP-1 receptor agonist approved for that use — and Novo Nordisk said it expected a US launch in early January 2026. Eight months later, the pill is the cheaper published entry point into branded semaglutide.
| Form and tier | Published self-pay price per month | Notes from the page |
|---|---|---|
| Wegovy pill, 1.5 mg | $149 | "Self-pay pricing varies by dose" |
| Wegovy pill, 4 mg | $149 | "4 mg offer only available until August 31, 2026, then $199 per month for 4 mg" |
| Wegovy pill, 9 mg | $299 | |
| Wegovy pill, 25 mg | $299 | |
| Wegovy pen, 0.25 / 0.5 / 1 / 1.7 / 2.4 mg | $199 for two fills, then $349 | "Offer for 2 monthly fills through December 31, 2026" |
| Wegovy HD pen, 7.2 mg | $399 | |
| Either form, commercial plan that covers it | "as little as $25" | savings card |
| Either form, eligible Medicare | $50 | Medicare GLP-1 Bridge |
Where the lines cross
At the entry tiers the pill is less than half the pen: $149 against $349 once the pen's promotional fills are used up. That is the headline, and it is why "wegovy pill price" queries have exploded since January.
But the pill's ladder is steeper. By the 9 mg and 25 mg oral tiers the price is $299, only $50 below the standard pen and $100 below the HD pen. So the saving is real at the bottom of the ladder and modest at the top — which matters, because the tier you end up on is a clinical outcome, not something you pick.
Three things that quietly change the comparison:
- The dated offers. Two of the six rows above carry an explicit expiry printed on Novo's own page. Budget on the post-expiry number, not the promotional one.
- Insurance flips it. If your plan covers Wegovy, the $25 card floor applies to either form and the self-pay ladder becomes irrelevant. If your plan excludes obesity treatment, the ladder is the whole story.
- The 2027 list-price cut does not touch this. Novo's 24 February 2026 release lowering list prices to $675 from 1 January 2027 states explicitly that the change does "not impact other access efforts, including direct-to-patient, self-pay prices."
Cost is not the only difference, and we are not the ones to weigh the rest
A daily tablet and a weekly injection differ in administration requirements, adherence patterns, side-effect experience, and what happens if you miss one. Those are conversations for your prescriber or pharmacist. We are reporting the two price ladders because nobody had put them side by side with the dates attached — not because price should decide the form.
Tracking either one
Whichever form you are on, the number worth knowing is your real cost per dose: a $149 month of daily tablets is roughly $4.90 a day, while a $349 pen delivering four weekly injections is $87.25 a dose. Those units aren't comparable until you normalise them, which is exactly what a log does automatically — see how to track GLP-1 cost per dose and the semaglutide compound page.

Frequently asked questions
- Is the Wegovy pill cheaper than the injection?
- At the published self-pay tiers, the pill starts lower — $149 a month at 1.5 mg against $349 for the standard pen once the promotional period ends. At the top oral tier the gap narrows to $299 versus $349. Insurance coverage can reverse the comparison entirely.
- When was the Wegovy pill approved?
- The FDA approved once-daily oral semaglutide 25 mg for weight management on 22 December 2025, the first oral GLP-1 receptor agonist approved for that use. Novo Nordisk said it expected a US launch in early January 2026.
- Do the pill and the pen use the same dose numbers?
- No. The oral tiers are listed at 1.5, 4, 9 and 25 mg and the injection at 0.25 to 2.4 mg, plus a 7.2 mg HD pen. The numbers are not comparable across forms and appear here only as pricing tiers.
- Will these prices last?
- Several are explicitly dated. The 4 mg oral offer was published as running only until 31 August 2026, and the $199 pen offer as two fills through 31 December 2026, after which the page states $349 a month.
