Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide that non-selectively activates melanocortin receptors MC1R through MC5R. Its primary effects include melanogenesis (skin darkening via MC1R), appetite suppression (MC4R), and spontaneous erections (MC4R). The compound has a short half-life of approximately 1 hour but can produce prolonged physiological effects. Nausea, facial flushing, and increased libido are commonly reported side effects. Melanotan II is distinct from PT-141 (bremelanotide) in its receptor profile. Users should carefully track dosing, side effects, and cumulative melanogenic response.

Mechanism

A synthetic analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone that acts on melanocortin receptors. It is associated in research with increased melanin production (skin pigmentation) and, via central melanocortin activity, effects on appetite and sexual function.

Research summary

Not FDA-approved. It is widely sold online for tanning, a use not supported by regulatory approval, and public-health bodies have warned about unregulated products. Human clinical data are limited and safety concerns are prominent in the literature.
