> PLACEHOLDER — pending clinical review by licensed pharmacist. Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide that non-selectively activates melanocortin receptors MC1R through MC5R. Its primary effects include melanogenesis (skin darkening via MC1R), appetite suppression (MC4R), and spontaneous erections (MC4R). The compound has a short half-life of approximately 1 hour but can produce prolonged physiological effects. Nausea, facial flushing, and increased libido are commonly reported side effects. Melanotan II is distinct from PT-141 (bremelanotide) in its receptor profile. Users should carefully track dosing, side effects, and cumulative melanogenic response.
Mechanism
A synthetic analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone that acts on melanocortin receptors. It is associated in research with increased melanin production (skin pigmentation) and, via central melanocortin activity, effects on appetite and sexual function.
Research summary
Not FDA-approved. It is widely sold online for tanning, a use not supported by regulatory approval, and public-health bodies have warned about unregulated products. Human clinical data are limited and safety concerns are prominent in the literature.
Dosing in the literature
There is no approved clinical regimen and human pharmacokinetics from controlled trials are limited. This summary does not provide dosing.
Reported side effects
Reported effects include nausea, facial flushing, darkening of moles and new pigmented lesions, and spontaneous erections. Concerns about changes in pigmented lesions make dermatologic monitoring relevant. Sourcing and purity are recurring quality concerns.
Stacking notes
Marketed products are unregulated; there is no controlled human evidence supporting combinations, and safety warnings dominate the literature.
