Also known as: Byetta, exendin-4

Exenatide is an FDA-approved GLP-1 receptor agonist for type 2 diabetes. Subcutaneous injection.

Mechanism

A GLP-1 receptor agonist derived from exendin-4, a peptide originally identified in Gila monster venom. It resists rapid degradation relative to native GLP-1 and is associated with glucose-dependent insulin secretion, slowed gastric emptying, and reduced appetite.

Research summary

One of the earliest approved GLP-1 receptor agonists for type 2 diabetes, available in twice-daily and extended-release once-weekly formulations. Marketed as Byetta and Bydureon.

Reported side effects

Gastrointestinal effects (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) are most commonly reported. Prescribing information includes warnings such as pancreatitis and, for the extended-release form, thyroid C-cell tumor risk in rodents. This is not a complete safety profile.
