> PLACEHOLDER — pending clinical review by licensed pharmacist. Lixisenatide is an FDA-approved GLP-1 receptor agonist for type 2 diabetes. Subcutaneous injection.
Mechanism
A short-acting GLP-1 receptor agonist derived from exendin-4. It is associated with glucose-dependent insulin secretion and pronounced slowing of gastric emptying, with a relatively larger effect on post-meal glucose.
Research summary
Approved for type 2 diabetes and studied in the GetGoal program, with a cardiovascular outcomes trial (ELIXA). Marketed as Adlyxin/Lyxumia and also used in a fixed-ratio combination with insulin glargine.
Dosing in the literature
Trials evaluated once-daily subcutaneous administration. Specific regimens are individualized and set by a prescribing clinician; they are outside the scope of this summary.
Reported side effects
Gastrointestinal effects (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) are most commonly reported. Prescribing information includes warnings such as pancreatitis. This is not a complete safety profile.
Stacking notes
Combination with basal insulin has been studied (fixed-ratio products); combination with sulfonylureas raises hypoglycemia considerations. Combinations are clinical decisions.
