> PLACEHOLDER — pending clinical review by licensed pharmacist. Tirzepatide is a first-in-class dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor co-agonist developed by Eli Lilly. Unlike single-receptor agonists, tirzepatide activates both incretin pathways with an imbalanced bias toward GIP signalling, which is thought to contribute to its superior weight-loss and glycaemic efficacy in head-to-head trials versus semaglutide. Its half-life of approximately 120 hours supports once-weekly dosing. Tirzepatide is marketed as Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes and Zepbound for chronic weight management. Patients transitioning from other GLP-1 therapies may need dose titration and careful side-effect monitoring. Tracking injection site rotation, gastrointestinal tolerance, and weight trends over time helps optimise individual outcomes.
Mechanism
A dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. In research it engages both incretin pathways, which is associated with improved glycemic control and appetite regulation. A fatty-acid moiety supports albumin binding and a once-weekly dosing interval.
